my two newest userpics (beaker - a static image, and myron cope - an animated gif) are not displaying when i try to use them.

i know they've worked before. i know they are the newest ones i've uploaded, but they're at least a month old.

anyone know what's up?

at this point, regardless of the outcome, i will be thrilled to have the election finally happen.

i can't say we're going to get it, but i think we all are hoping for a change.

i'm not a scholar. i'm not particularly well-educated. but i know what i've seen and what i've learned, and i can spot patterns in behavior.

you might say i'm being unnecessarily pessimistic and worried about the direction our country (and our culture) is headed, but i can counter that you've got your head in the sand, or you're ignorant of history.

i can't validate this with any scientific fact, but given george w, bush's history in running businesses, it wasn't hard for me to envision him steering the economic ship into the rocks. (DO NOT challenge me on this. record surplus to record defecit on HIS WATCH is exactly that...end of story.)

thankfully, i don't get that same feeling with either current candidate. but based on what i know of the 2 candidates' past history, and transposing that to what i think the future likely holds for these men, my decision is easy for me. neither is perfect, but that is part of a politician's job - compromise. far too many people have forgotten that, INCLUDING candidates.

in the last 2 weeks before the election, does it really matter? i don't have any beef with powell (other than that whole lying before congress thing, but i think someone else was pulling his strings on that...), but he's retired. why do we give a rat's doo doo maker?

i just found out via infinitestatemachine.com that one of my favorite writer/producers ever passed away a full week ago, and i didn't know it.

norman whitfield, the man responsible for "i heard it through the grapevine", "war", "papa was a rolling stone" and almost the entire output of my favorite funk/soul group (Rose Royce), passed away last week.

this calls for a special tribute episode of radiohypno....

watching "102 minutes that changed the world" - actual footage shot by various people in various part of new york on 9/11/01. watching the smoke completely envelop the cameras and their holders. hearing the screams over walkie-talkies. people completely gray, covered form head to toe in the dust that minutes earlier was the tallest building in nyc. unreal.

if this is what the end of the world looks like, i want no part of it.

aside from the "what i did on my summer vacation" aspects, i do not think of my little slice of LJ here as a "news" site. when i read a blog, i'm not looking for award winning reporting. hell, i'm not even necessarily looking for truth. i want to see what's up with people / places / websites / other things that i'm interested in. that, i believe, is the function of a blog.

which makes it frustrating for me when i see headlines pop up in Google News, and when i visit the link, EXPECTING (as one would on GOOGLE NEWS)....well, expecting something other than the Blog section of Christian Science Monitor, WSJ, or any one of a number of other traditionally news-y sites.

attention google reader: i want the NEWS section, not the EDITORIAL section. i want cold, hard facts, not politicized opinion masquerading as cold, hard facts. if i want that, i'd watch cable news.

am i wrong here? should articles like THIS appear in my news headlines?*

* - for the record, i would be just as miffed if this were a piece on obama's campaign. i just want NEWS....
